New computer hardware and software will be arriving at the Studio offices over the new two weeks, to be installed and configured as soon as possible in the days directly following. At that time, we'll also hold our annual 'Rewiring Day' and reorganize the layout of the Studio to accomodate the growing number of students who use laptops and netbooks for their multimedia work. This article will describe some of the new equipment and software, and the plans for the reorganization of the Studio will be needed to take full advantage of the tools.
Our newest computer will be a state-of-the-art new Macintosh Pro workstation (the one with 8 new 'Nehalem' Intel processors, not yet available on most PCs). This will be the fastest computer in the Studio, once it is installed. It will replace the (aging) 2005 Macintosh G5 currently located against the East wall of the Studio.
For software upgrades, we will also upgrade our Macintosh OSes to add Final Cut Studio 2, upgrade our Adobe Creative Suite to CS4 Master Edition, will also install Final Cut Express 5, Final Cut Pro 10, Silverback, and Toast 10 Titanium Pro. The list of new software, therefore, will include the following:

These are in addition to the software previously available on the Studio workstations.
The computers will be set to run Macintosh OS X 10.5 at boot, and will use the VMware Fusion virtualization system to run Microsoft Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux, as well. Please let me know if you would prefer that we install and configure Boot Camp for this — it would take a lot of work, and would offer less flexibility, but might have advtanges for some users. We'd be happy to consider it, if asked.
Other New/Upgraded Equipment
We will add another terabyte of hard disk space to the SNMfiles server, used for storing and moving multimedia projects currently in development between computers in the Studio and from Studio systems to members' personal computers.
We will decommission our Macintosh G5 workstation and our old Dell Optiplex when we set up the new Mac Pro. Once the new workstation is online, we'll post the remote-access information here, so members can queue processor-intensive tasks to the new CPUs.
The Studio has a tradition of 'Rewiring Day,' one day a year when we disconnect all of the cables and reorganize the connections among and between the various pieces of equipment, to meet new (and emerging) needs and to enable new capabilities. This year we'll plan rewiring day for early August. The new wiring will be capable of supporting netbooks (smaller laptops, usually with minimal processors and only VGA (analog) video out, as well as integrating the Blu-Ray mastering facilities into the entire assembly.
Here's the provisional wiring diagram for the coming year (as of March):
